We often hear that this is a Free Will Universe. We like to think we have control over our lives, so we believe that we can alter our path with any given decision. While it is certainly true that any decision holds the potential to alter our lives dramatically, we cannot avoid the growth opportunities that we signed up for, nor would we want to.

What about Free Will? Don’t we control our own destiny? We create our lives by acting and feeling in alignment with a specific purpose. At the same time, we have signed up for certain Personal Growth Opportunities. If we successfully avoid these experiences because they’re painful, we miss the point of our lives. Without the pain of a broken Heart, for example, we cannot gain an understanding of Love.

We have free will to a certain extent, but we will experience the Personal Growth Opportunities that we signed up for, no matter what decisions we make along the way. If we came to Earth to eat ice cream, we have free will to choose the flavor.

Free Will allows us to release the negative experiences we cling to throughout our lives. We have Free Will to choose our priorities, figure out a unique way to achieve them and take unique action. The trick is to not care if our path takes us in a a direction we don't expect. When a surprise gust blows you off course, evaluate your new situation, choose your priorities, figure out a unique way to reach them and take action.

Free Will makes life flexible and dynamic, but if we steer too far away from our selves, life will redirect us. We first get subtle signals, then more intense, as we continue to ignore what is before our eyes. If we see the signals and act, we can avoid disaster. If we avoid the issue for too long, life might take drastic action to put us back on our path, no matter how strong our Free Will may be.

Understanding the limitations of Free Will helps us to know when to let go. If your efforts are plagued by setbacks and obstacles, you might be going against the flow of your life. Pursue what comes naturally to you and use your Free Will to get creative in your pursuits.
